Decoding Buzzword Bingo: What Your Coworkers (and Boss) Are REALLY Saying
If you have been working in IT or in a moderately structured office for more than 5 minutes, you have probably come across that strange parallel language known as Corporate Jargon or Business Buzzwords . It is that language stuffed with misused English terms, abstruse metaphors and mysterious acronyms, apparently designed to make everything seem more important, strategic and complicated than it is.
But what do these words really mean? We at Deliverable, armed with coffee and years of corporate trenches, have put together a mini-simultaneous translation dictionary to help you navigate (or at least smile wryly) the next time you find yourself in the middle of an unsolicited Buzzword Bingo.
The Deliverable Mini-Dictionary: Corporate Jargon -> Human Language
1. Alignment / Align ourselves / Make an Alignment
- What they say: "We need to have a quick meeting to get this straight."
- What this REALLY means: "I have no idea what's going on, and you probably don't, but we need to show that we're communicating. Let's talk for 30 minutes without deciding anything, so we can tell the boss that 'we're aligned.' Then maybe we can schedule another meeting to re-align on alignment."
2. Synergy / Synergy
- What they say: “We need to create more synergy between teams X and Y.”
- What it REALLY means: "Let's put two groups that can barely stand each other together and hope that their forced union will magically produce amazing results, instead of the usual organizational disaster and collective morale decline. It sounds good to say that, though."
3. Bandwidth / Band
- What they say: "I don't have enough bandwidth to track this new activity right now."
- What it REALLY means: "I'm swamped up to my neck with work (what little I have left). If you add ONE MORE thing to do, I'm seriously in danger of a personal blue screen of death. It's a polite way of saying 'NO,' hoping you'll get the message without me having to cry."
4. Deep Dive / In-depth
-
What they say: "Let's do a deep dive on this topic at the next meeting."
-
What this REALLY means: "Let's get ready to dig into this topic until we completely lose sight of the original goal. We'll analyze irrelevant data, produce 50 additional slides, and end up not making any concrete decisions, but we can say we've 'did it.' Bring extra coffee."
-
A grueling activity that requires the right mental and physical equipment. Almost as much as our "Survived another meeting that could have been an email" T-Shirt | Deliverable .
5. Take This Offline / Let's Talk About It Outside / Let's Look at It Separately
- What they say: "Interesting point, but maybe we should 'take it offline'."
-
What does it REALLY mean: (Select one or more options)
- "You're asking an awkward/smart question and I don't know the answer."
- "This discussion is getting boring/pointless/too technical and I want to cut it NOW."
- "We're getting off topic and I want to get back to my slides."
- "Literal translation: 'We will NEVER talk about this AGAIN.'"
6. Low-Hanging Fruit / Ripe (or Low) Fruit
- What they say: "Let's focus on low-hanging fruit first to get quick wins."
- What this REALLY means: "We ignore the serious and complex problems that require real work and strategy. Instead, we look for the easiest, most trivial and quickest thing to do, even if it brings little value, so we can show management that we are 'proactive' and have 'achieved something.' Often the fruit has already fallen from the tree and is rotten."
Conclusion
Corporate jargon is a fascinating and often nonsensical universe. Mastering it won’t necessarily make you more productive, but understanding what’s behind the words can help you navigate the murky waters of the office with a little more awareness (and resignation). And when words fail, remember: there’s always a Deliverable T-shirt that can do the talking for you.
